Introduction

Dual Plate Check Valves were first developed in the late 1950s and immediately became the go-to check valve for many pipeline engineers due to their proven performance and minimal pressure losses. These valves are most commonly utilized in Power Stations, Petrochemical plants, Chemical Industries, Sewage Treatment Plants, Pulp And paper industries, and have become the industry standard for process and project engineers worldwide.

Dual Plate Check Valve manufacturers designed them with perfect trims for years of trouble-free use. This valve is used mainly in potable water or clean air pipelines that operates either horizontally or vertically. This valve isn’t designed to retain fluids that include particles, such as sewage or raw waste. This valve should not be used with fluids that contain hazardous gases. It is designed to create flow in the direction indicated by the arrow on the surface plate and to close quickly when flow reversal is detected. The plate will list the valve particulars like its size, model number,  pressure rating, and materials of construction. This valve permits one-way flow while automatically preventing backflow when the fluid in the line is flowing in the other direction. This valve may sometimes be referred to as a clack valve or a non-return valve.

What is a Dual Plate Check Valve?

Among the nonreturn valves, the dual plate check valve is the product of choice for most of the applications. It comes in a wide range of standard diameters and standard pressures. This valve design has shown to be an excellent choice for most industrial needs in plants and pipeline networks, thanks to the dual-plates that generate the optimal dynamic flow behaviour. The twin plate check valve is ideal for usage with gases, liquids, and vapours. Because the well-thought-out design eliminates the need for housing drilling (retainer-less design), there are no housing seals other than the flange seal. As a result, there is no need to test for fugitive emissions.

Dual Plate check valves have a spring-assisted dual disc action with a short stroke for higher dynamic performance that responds quickly to speed variations. To safeguard expensive pumping solutions, the valve has been sealed for the fraction of a second, reducing loud noise and minimizing peak pressures. A Dual Plate Check valve does not allow backward flow. It is compact and lightweight, yet it has a robust design. It consists of two spring-loaded plates connected by a hinge pin. The plates shut on their own as the flow changes, blocking the fluid from flowing back.

Working of Dual Plate Check Valve

When fluid pressure is exerted in one direction, the valve plate gets open. The passage will be cut off if the liquid flows in the other direction owing to fluid pressure and the effect of the plate on the valve seat. Due to the lower flow, the torsion spring would also be able to seal the plate without any reversal in fluid flow.

The plates of a typical dual plate check valve are smaller in the area and lower in weight since there are two instead of one big disc, like in a swing check valve. The plate opening is interesting, in that it lifts up at the heel before swinging, assuring that there is no rubbing on the seat. Due to which the rate of seal wear and tear is lowered. Other designs are unable to accommodate this feature, leading to a greater rate of seal wear. Special spring action and hinge design are used to accomplish this.

Construction: Dual Plate Check Valve

The dual plate check valve has a cylindrical body and, in comparison to other valve configurations, can bear a considerably more linear stress distribution. The cylindrical body is built to withstand heavy loads, as well as the weight and thickness of the valve. As a result, in the event of extreme loading, this valve offers a clear advantage in terms of safety and economy.

Two semi-circular D-shaped closing plates are assembled with torsion springs and attached to a vertical hinge pin, allowing them to rotate freely around the hinge pin’s axis. Two brackets on either side hold the hinge pin along with the spring and plates, which are fixed on the body. The stop pin placed above the hinge pin is likewise retained by the brackets, preventing the closing plates from sliding beyond the required opening. The bracket is constructed with the hinge pin, stop pin, torsion spring, and closure plates, and then the entire assembly is inserted perpendicular to the body bottom rib, then turned to 90 degrees so that the brackets are situated below the lug supplied in the body. The bracket bearing the complete assembly was secured by the lug using screws. For smooth swivelling movement, bearing washers are placed between the plates. Spring bearings are also included to keep the spring from moving

Features and Benefits: Dual Plate Check valve

Dual Plate Check Valve manufacturers designed the valve in a way that it includes everything that other traditional valves lack. It is the most productive valve in operation regardless of fluid or service for which it is employed, and it is the simplest to handle and install in any pipe system with no restrictions.

Some of the most impressive features that Dual plate check valve offers are:

  • Lower Pressure Drop: Because each plate only covers half the area of a swing check disc, the Dual Plate Check Valve splits the overall force in half. One-half the force on each plate necessitates one-half the thickness, resulting in a swing check disc with one-fourth the mass. The force required to move the plates is not increased by the weight of the plates. Due to its reduced force, the Dual Plate Check Valve has a substantially smaller pressure drop.
  • Light Weight: Owing to its two-plate split design a Dual plate Check valve manufacturer reduces the weight by 80-90% as compared to its conventional flanged counterpart.
  • Reduced Water Hammer: Due to the fact that the valve does not close relying on backpressure or reverse flow, the water hammer is nearly non-existent with dual plate check valves. Each plate, which is approximately half of a swing check disc size, offers a straight flow channel with the least resistance. Valve closure begins as soon as flow velocity falls below the prescribed minimum velocity, thanks to spring aided closing, and the closing rate follows the flow velocity decrease pattern. As the flow velocity drops down, the valve shuts, even before the flow reverses. This prevents water hammer.
  • Retainerless Design: Many check valves have four openings in the body of the valve where the hinge pin and stop pin are mounted. There are no holes that run the length of the valve body in a retainerless design. A retainerless design may be advantageous in applications where particularly dangerous or corrosive gases are going through the valve to reduce the likelihood of any gas escaping via perforations in the valve body.
  • No Slamming: The two plates of the Dual Plate Check Valve are hinged perpendicular in the middle for horizontal installations, which removes the gravity impact thoroughly. Furthermore, because the weight of each plate is one-fourth that of the swing disc and the peak velocity is less than half that of a swing check valve, the momentum created as they travel to the closed position is just a fraction of that generated in a swing check valve. Furthermore, owing to spring aided closure, the valve gets closed as the flow velocity drops down well before the flow reversal. As it begins to close, the flow cushions the plates and seat, preventing slamming.

Installation: Dual Plate Check Valve

  • Cleaning the valve: The Dual Plate check valve’s end connections are fastened using rust-proof oil. Before installing, clean the same surface. Valve plates should be inspected for corrosion and oil to ensure that they are in good working order.
  • Checking the Flow Direction: The flow direction in the pipeline should match the flow direction specified on the nameplate and be denoted by the ‘arrow’ on the valve body.
  • Horizontal Piping: Position the Pin Retainers (Plugs) up and down in the conduit before inserting the valve.
  • Check Valve and Butterfly Valve Installation Distance: When connecting the Butterfly valve to the Dual Plate Check Valve’s output side, make sure there is enough space between the two valves for the Dual Plate Check Valve’s plates to be open. The Butterfly Valve disc does not even come close to touching the Dual Plate Check Valve. Additionally, maintain a sufficient distance to avoid any peripheral or abnormal flow conditions.
  • The valve’s position in relation to the pump’s discharge: When connecting the Dual Plate Check Valve to the pump, make sure the pump flow follows the valve’s two plates for optimal output.
  • For horizontal installations, the valves are set to function in an optimum open position at a line flow rate of 2 to 2.7 m/sec of water. Vertical installation can have a little higher flow velocity than horizontal installation. Please mention at the time of inquiry if the fluid has lower specific gravity.
  • For cyclic flow applications, such as the output of reciprocating machines, please contact the manufacturer.
  • Dual Plate Check Valves should be installed so that the flow velocity is consistent across the cross-section.

Maintenance: Dual Plate Check Valve

During routine valve maintenance, the following operations can be performed.

  • Check for any physical damage or external leaking via the body wall.
  • Check for any damage to the valve gasket faces.
  • Verify that the disc movement is unrestricted.
  • Check for gouging marks on the Hinge pin or Disc caused by the Spring component.
  • Make that there are no cracks or scratches on the body or disc seating surfaces.
  • Make sure the Spring bearing component isn’t damaged.
